THE CRATERS OF THE MOON NATIONAL MONUMENT in Idaho is situated 60 miles south-east of Sun Valley and 15 miles south-west of Arco. The eerie, silent landscape composed of black larva and cinders together with sparse vegetation covers over eighty square miles and rises as a plateau from the surrounding fertile plain. The last volcanic eruption at this site occurred about 2000 years ago. Light snow had fallen just before these pictures were taken. Several of the pictures have been enhanced to emphasise the mysterious atmosphere of the area. |
