Master tanners and furriers made the town's
fortune during the 13th century and its tradition
of craft industries is still firmly established.
In the 13th century the larger of two canals
running through the town and fed by the small
river Bonnette (a tributary of the Aveyron) was
built. Le Canal du Bessarel (Above, Right and
Below) serviced a water-mill and other
industries such as the 14th century tannery
visible in the picture below. The towering white
cliffs of Anglars Rock, which overshadows the
Aveyron river and town, is seen in the
background.
