Our party embarks on one of the flat bottomed
boats (gabarres) for a trip down river.
(Left)
The 12th century Château-de-Castelnaud - an
important castle of the region.
It changed sides several times during the Hundred
Years War but was mainly held by the English. It
was said to have been destroyed and rebuilt ten
times during that period. The lastest renovations
commenced in 1960.
A strategic bend in the river separated it from
its equally famous rival at Beynac.

The twentieth century Chateau de la
Mâlartrie - to the left of the picture - is
in a style from the 15th century.
(Left)
The Manoir de Tarde, a manor house of the once
locally famous Tarde family (the 16th century
humanist, Canon Tarde, and Gabriel Tarde, the
19th century sociologist). The main building is
flanked by a round turret with a pepper-pot roof.
