PAUL BEARD was the Leader (a position now referred to as 'Concert Master') of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1936 until his retirement in 1962. Both he and Marie Wilson (the Deputy Leader of the orchestra) are shown 'in action' in the photograph below.

MARIE WILSON, The Deputy Leader (shown above), was with the orchestra from its inception in 1930 until September 1944. During that time she often took Paul Beard's place at Promenade Concerts.

FREDERICK THURSTON was for many years the principal clarinet player in the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also appeared as a much admired soloist at recitals and concerts, and on many recordings.
