THE DESERT TRAINING CENTER MUSEUM is situated to the west of Blythe on Highway 10. During World War II the Desert Training Center, opened in 1942, covered 17,500 square miles (over 45,000 square kilometres) of sparsley populated land. It was used by General George Patton to train troops prior to Operation Torch, the invasion of Morocco (North Africa), which took place on 8 November 1942. Over one million men were trained here and at eleven sub-camps. The George Patton Museum has been created as a memorial to the controversial WWII general, whose statue (left) dominates the entrance to the site.
